Miami By Way Of Havana – Part 2

Texas to Miami

Anyone will tell you that the drive through Texas is gruelling. The state just seems to go on and on forever. To add insult to injury, there were multiple accidents along the way. It seemed like the traffic was stop and go from San Antonio all the way to the Louisiana border. No offense to Texans, but they aren’t the greatest drivers. There were no less than 10 major crashes along our route. It was crazy.

Once we got to Louisiana, things went a lot faster. In a matter of hours we went through Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. Then, just like that, we were in Florida.

Florida Welcome Center – Pensacola

At this point, we started a slow roll down the west coast of Florida. The gulf coast is really very different than the east coast. It seems a lot more laid back.

Follow that dream parkway took us to the ocean, but not before we passed through this town.

As you might imagine, the town name has been a source of controversy. Apparently, it is not what we first thought. I will reveal the supposed meaning behind the naming of the town at the end of the post. In the meanwhile, welcome to Florida (WTF).

I thought this yard art was very clever, especially the bird house people. Maria qsaw them first. She turned around so I could get a picture. I had to get out of the car and walk up to the house to get a good shot. I’m sure I’m not the first person to ever do that, but I still kind of felt like a stalker. We passed it on the way to a campground that we stayed at in Homosassa that was very nice. It was the Camp and Water Campground.

These were our camp hosts. Violet and Kiki didn’t quite know what to make of them.

The next day we were off to Siesta key. It was our first real day at the beach.

Kiki’s not too sure about the sand and surf.
Violet is a little more willing to explore
The perfect day!

And yet another day at the beach a little further down the coast. It’s a rough job, but somebodies got to do it.

And then it was off to Miami. Havana has treated us well so far. It’s a lttle crowded with only one bathroom though.

Occupado!!! A little privacy please.

And now, without further ado, the answer to the question that’s been burning a hole in your brain. Why would you name a town crackertown??? The story, as I understand it, is that there were a lot of cattlemen in that part of Florida. They were called crackers because they used to crack whips to herd cattle. So, the town was named for the cattlemen.
