Off The Beaten Path

The Road Less Traveled

We decided to take the road less traveled when we left Fort Stockton.  Somewhere around Ozona we headed south and got on the 90.  This took us through some very rural parts of south Texas.

Uvalde

One of the towns that we went through was Uvalde.  It’s a quiet little town.  There are some beautiful old buildings that surround the town square.  You can tell that it was once thriving but has since fallen into decline.  Windows are boarded up here and there.  The town square has a fountain that serves as a focal point for a memorial to the children and teachers who were gunned down in their school by a gunman in May 2022.  19 children and 2 teachers lost their lives that day.  17 others were injured.

All around the memorial there are stations with a picture and tributes to each victim.  It’s a very emotional experience.  The children were so young; babies really.  It makes you wonder how and why we keep playing out this mass shooting scenario over and over without any attempt to change anything in any meaningful way.

Seguin

We took the scenic route leaving Uvalde.  It bypassed San Antonio and passed through the little town of Seguin.  It’s a small, quiet little town that’s very well keep up.  There were squirrels in the town square that seemed very used to people.  They were nice enough to pose for a few pictures.  Seguin boosts the world’s largest pecan.

Roadside Art

Once we were done in Seguin, we headed toward our stop for the night.  Along the way, we passed a collection of recycled art that caught our eye.  We first noticed a few pieces along the front of this house.  We turned around and realized that it extended all the way up the driveway.  The owner of the house came out and told us that this was his retirement hobby.

Palmetto State Park

Our stop for the night was Palmetto State Park.  The site was nice, with full hook-ups.  We were planning to shower that night, but the bathrooms were nasty.  Planet Fitness would be our first stop of the day the following morning.  I will say that the state parks in the south are very reasonable with generally good amenities.

Houston

We didn’t spend much time in Houston.  We did stop at the Water Wall, which is a 64-foot-tall structure with massive sheets of water.  We approached it from the back side.  As we came around to the front, we realized that it had a whole other dimension to it.

And with that, we were done with Texas. Next stop Louisiana.
