We’re finally on the road.
We packed Havana up and are ready to go. The kitties have packed their favorite toys and we’re off.
Heading East
We left late on the first day. We only drove a few hours, made it to Willcox, and called it a night.
We dry camped at the back of the parking lot at a Harvest Host location called the Cattle Rest Saloon and RV Park. It was a perfect stop over. The cats seemed relaxed so life was good.
New Mexico went by in a bit of a blur. Except for a gas stop, we passed right through it. By 3:30 the next day, we had made it to Texas. Only 880 exits to go to get to the other side. Texas is such a diverse state. Dry and dusty in the west. Wet and green in the east. There’s also a huge difference in how they drive. East Texas drivers are kind of crazy. The amount of crashes we encountered along Interstate 10 is a testament to that fact. We sat in hours of stop and go traffic due to crash after crash from San Antonio to the Louisiana border and beyond.
The Scenery
I will say that some of the countryside was very pretty. The wildflowers were blooming along the side of the road. We also had a rare emu sighting. He pranced back and forth behind the fence. I think he was giving us ample photo ops.
Rest and Relaxation
We are not very skilled at planning ahead. We’re not sure where we’ll be on any given day. We’re more spontaneous. We’ve stayed at a few travel centers because that’s just where we were when we were done driving. On other nights we’ve stayed at campgrounds with hook ups and amenities. on Friday, we knocked off early and stayed at Cascade Caverns outside of San Antonio. We thought about taking the cavern tour, but decided to take the girls for a hike instead. Their part is easy. they get to sit in their backpack carriers and be carted around like royalty. We tried them on leash but they were like “no, we’re good, we’ll ride, thank you very much.” They are massively spoiled kitties. Tonight is our first overnight at a Cracker Barrel. It’s great. It’s quiet and feels very safe. Kudos to Maria for thinking of it.
The Kitties
The kitties are traveling well. They sleep while we are driving so that they have plenty of energy for bouncing off our heads at night.
Violet likes to keep watch at night through the passenger side window. we leave a portion of the window cover open for her. She is very nosey. We might should have named her Mrs. Kravitz.
Kiki has really surprised me. She is the more timid one, but she has, on a few occasions, come to sit on my lap to watch the traffic go by as we drive. She’s very calm about it. She’s facinated by big rigs. She has that in common with Maria.
The girls have volunteered to drive tomorrow. I think it’s a bad idea.
Your house on the Feather looks lonely! Have fun, write more and drive safe. We will plan a decompression for the street to hear all the stories when you get back! Love you guys.
We will definitely have to do a decompression Friday 😁
Sounds like a fabulous road trip so far. So nice that the kitties are cooperating…well, most of the time.
The kitties are exceeding our expectations. They are being very good.
